How to use the time card

  1. Enter times. Fill in start and end for each day you worked. Add unpaid break minutes if you took a break.
  2. Pick your overtime rules. Federal rules count weekly hours over 40. California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado also count daily hours.
  3. Read the tape. Total hours show as hours and minutes and as decimals. Add an hourly rate to see gross pay.

Overnight shifts and breaks

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the shift as running past midnight. A shift from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am counts as 8 hours, and it counts on the day it started. Unpaid breaks are subtracted from the shift.

Overtime rules by state

Most of the United States follows the federal rule: time and a half after 40 hours in a workweek. A few states add daily rules. Pick a state to see its rules and an example.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate hours worked from a time card?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. For 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with a 30 minute break, that is 8 hours 30 minutes minus 30 minutes, which is 8 hours.

How do I turn hours and minutes into decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. The hours calculator has a chart.

Does this calculator work for overnight shifts?

Yes. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is counted as ending the next day. Hours count on the day the shift started.

Is my time card saved anywhere?

It is saved only in your own browser, so it is still there when you come back on the same device. Nothing is sent to a server. Clear Week removes it.

Is overtime always time and a half?

Federal law sets overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate for covered employees. California also sets double time for long days. Some employers pay more than the law requires.
