Questions people ask

When does overtime start in California?

After 8 hours in a workday, after 40 hours in a workweek, and on the seventh consecutive workday. Hours over 12 in a day, and hours over 8 on the seventh day, are paid at double time.

Are hours paid twice when a week has long days and more than 40 hours?

No. Hours already paid as daily overtime don't count again toward the 40-hour weekly total. Five 10-hour days are 50 hours: 40 regular and 10 overtime hours, not 20 overtime hours.

How does the seventh-day rule work?

If you work all seven days of a workweek, the first 8 hours on the seventh day are paid at 1.5 times and any hours after that at double. In the calculator, enter hours for all seven days and set the week start your employer uses.

Do four 10-hour days get overtime in California?

Employers can adopt alternative workweek schedules, such as four 10-hour days, that change when daily overtime starts. This calculator uses the standard rule of overtime after 8 hours, so the result can differ if you work an adopted alternative schedule.
